What You Need to Know
You may have recently seen news reports about a cybersecurity vulnerability affecting aftermarket anti-theft systems. Security researchers have identified a flaw in devices branded as KARR and SWDS that could allow someone with a Bluetooth scanner to unlock doors or prevent an engine from starting.
Modern Ford vehicles come equipped with robust, factory-installed security features. The KARR and SWDS modules affected by this issue are third-party devices that were sometimes installed as inventory trackers or offered as optional upgrades at the time of sale. Our goal is simple: make sure every driver feels informed, safe, and confident behind the wheel.
How to Check if Your Vehicle Is Affected
This vulnerability only affects vehicles with a physical KARR or SWDS module installed. Here's how to find out if yours has one:
- Locate the module: Look under the driver's side dashboard for a small black box or module labeled "KARR" or "SWDS."
- Check your paperwork: Review your original purchase or upgrade documents to see if a KARR or SWDS anti-theft package was selected at the time of sale.
What Should You Do Next?
If You Actively Use the KARR App
The manufacturer, Acrisure, has released a security patch to fix this vulnerability. If you use the KARR companion app on your smartphone, updating is quick and easy:
- Open the KARR companion app on your smartphone.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the latest firmware update.
- Once the update completes, your system is secure.
If You Don't Use the App, or You're Not Sure
If a module is installed but you don't have an active subscription or the smartphone app, the device cannot receive the over-the-air update and remains vulnerable.
- Do not attempt to unplug the device yourself. This may trigger the immobilization feature and prevent your vehicle from starting.
- Contact our Service Department. Our certified technicians can safely inspect your vehicle, confirm whether a module is installed, and professionally disable or remove it without affecting your ignition system.
